Asher's First Birthday!

Believe it or not, our little Ashey baby is turning 1! What makes it even more special is that Asher shares a birthday with his Granny. I just put the finishing touches on his cake. Asher is very much like a little monkey at this age. He's a fun loving little boy who adores his family. He loves to squeal, growl, chase vacuums, and crawl onto the dishwasher door. All in all, he is a delight and he has definitely lived up to his name - "happy little king". We love you Asher!

Training wheels

This is Eugene's bike. It was a birthday present in August. My mom and I found it at a yard sale for $5. He really likes it a lot, but Eugene has never ridden a bicycle without training wheels. Eugene can read, count to 1,000, tell you all about the planets and the human body, and "run faster than a medium-sized airplane", but balancing on a bike is not yet one of his strengths. I took him out today for a practice session but I have decided to go buy him some training wheels instead. I would rather have him enjoy riding and learn to fly solo later. There's still plenty of time for that.

I love to kiss my boys goodnight. I love to lean over them and press my lips on their foreheads and say a prayer for them. I love their breathing and the way their sweaty hair smells like a wet dog. Occasionally, when I sneak into their room I find one of their beds empty and have to search around in the dark for my missing child. Several nights ago, Darby was missing but it didn't take me long to find him up on the top bunk with Eugene. Brothers just don't get much sweeter than this!

To the best of our knowledge, barring unforeseen circumstances, this will be our home for the next five years. It is in a nice little neighborhood with a community pool about 11 miles from the hospital where Dylan will work most of the time. It is on the westside of Jacksonville which is a little quieter and will be convenient to our families. It has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths with the 2 car garage, a fenced backyard and a screened porch. After five years of renting, it will be nice to be homeowners. We are very excited that God provided it for us and can't wait to get settled in and make it our own!

Wow, I can't believe I've only had two posts in the last two months. It isn't that nothing has been happening, on the contrary, all kinds of stuff has been happening! Eugene and Darby have been keeping me more than busy with all their antics (which I will hopefully be posting more of soon). I've been trying to master the art of couponing which means my preparation for shopping and the actual trips take longer (but I'm saving money!). To top it all off, I've been playing the role of travel agent and personal assistant to Dylan as we try to make all the necessary arrangements for his interviews. I'd like to say things will improve very soon, but we're about to head out for a busy interview weekend followed by Keith and Aimee's baby shower weekend followed by a couple more interview weekends. So, it may be a few more weeks before I get to post more fun pics of the boys. In the meantime, we will take a quick look back to a year ago with Darbs was in the belly and Eug was a mere 2.5 year old.

For those who have been to our house at Christmas or seen our Christmas photos, you've probably seen our stockings. Dylan got our first two from LLBean our first Christmas. We picked up Eugene's reindeer stocking and the snowflake stocking around Eugene's first Christmas. After that, LLBean discountinued the stockings and we couldn't get any more. This year will be Darby's first Christmas. Since we have had hopes of using the snowflake stocking someday for a girl, I decided to make Darby his very own special stocking with gingerbread men on it and I think it fits his personality very well. Here is a photo of the whole collection (and no, this does not imply a bun in the oven, I just wanted to see them all together).

Melissa is here this weekend and Dylan is on call today so Melissa and I took the boys to Morningside Nature Center and visited the farm and walked the trails through the long-leaf pine forest. It was a lovely morning. Eugene found a really nice pine cone and I promised him we would make his first-ever pine cone birdfeeder when we got home. He did a great job!

It was another fun weekend at the Nugent house. Dylan was off this weekend so we made a mad dash to Deltona for about 24 hrs and then found out we could get our hands on some tickets to the UF homecoming game vs. Arkansas (my parent's alma mater). We just couldn't pass up a chance to see the #1 ranked team, at home, with gorgeous weather, while Dylan had a day off, and we had a friend available to watch the boys. That just would not have been smart. Of course, during most of the game we were fearful that we were about to witness a huge upset, but they pulled it off anyways. It was fun. The rest of the pics are from a quick little birding outing near Paynes Prairie on Sunday afternoon. No new birds, but some old favorites, and some wonderful fresh air.

Last Friday Dylan had a short day so when he got home we decided to head outside for some family fun. We went down to Lake Wauberg, owned by UF, where they have a whole bunch of activities that are free for UF folk. We chose to play a round of disc golf, swim in the lake, and canoe for a little while. The boys loved being outside with Dadda and of course we had a blast with them as well.

We had a little project recently. My Mom's neighbor's, the Perkins, have a couple of bathroom fixture lawn ornaments in their garden that we have always admired. Several months ago Dylan saw a blue toilet on the side of the road that we were going to pick up and give to Doug, but it was cracked and not in very good shape. Just last month, after moving to Gainesville, Dylan saw another blue toilet on the side of the road and this one was in perfect condition! So he called me and I drove over and picked it up. Dylan stopped and picked out some plants to go in it and I brought it to Bville on my most recent trip. Since it was their anniversary weekend they went on a getaway and it was the perfect time to deliver the surprise in their yard so it would be there when they got home. From their response, I think they like it!

She made it in the likeness of the special cakes that our "Aunt" Mercy used to make for us when we were kids. Eugene loved it and talks about it all the time. "Uncle" Doug and Gloria came over for the festivities.

Doug was helping Eugene show off his new shirt for the camera but Eugene scooted out of the way and left Doug looking like the proud owner of a new cool car shirt!

Praise the Lord for houses with yards! When we were searching for places to rent in Gainesville I was getting so discouraged by the lousy options and the expensive prices. I was ready to be done with the whole thing and even seriously considered just renting a townhouse for a year. Thank the Lord Dylan had more faith than I did. We just kept looking and the Lord provided the perfect place for us at a price that was awesome (just like He did in Tampa!). I am so glad we have a yard and that Eugene can go outside and play in the afternoon. He keeps himself very well entertained as long as the hose is running (I put it on really low so as not to waste water/money). He takes whatever he can find and makes rivers and fountains and he has a blast. Here is a photo of his fountain from today.

Mid-vacation Update

Hey everybody,

We just arrived in Jersey this afternoon after three wonderful days in Lusby, Maryland. We toured DC and were delayed in catching our bus home due to all the hub-bub surrounding the shooting at the holocaust museum. We have many pictures already, but no time to sort and upload yet. We will post some as soon as we get a chance. We are having a great time, and we still have our time in Maine to come. Can't wait! We have added one bird to our life list - the Worm-eating warbler - and we have seen many others that we don't often see in FL, so it has been a successful trip all the way around. We look forward to sharing more of it with you soon.

Enjoying the new Tripod

In between running errands, rain showers, and trying to pack for vacation, I found a few moments to enjoy our amaryllis bulb that started to blossom a few days after we moved from Tampa . This provided me an opportunity to learn more about our camera and how to use it effectively with the tripod. Yesterday's lesson was aperature. I took a bunch of shots at various aperatures and views and learned how much more fun I can have with this hobby. Here are a few of my favorites.

New Beds

Today the boys upgraded to new beds! Eugene will now be sleeping in a twin bed instead of a toddler bed and Darby will be in the crib instead of a pack-n-play. We have two lovely matching twin beds from Marcia and Shirley (thank you so much!) and we went out today and bought a mattress for one of them. Eugene was very excited about the whole thing but we sternly warned him that he may not bounce or jump on the bed. The handsome quilt is a hand-me-down from the Folmsbee family and it is so perfect, thanks Rachel! We are so blessed by our friends and family and we thank God for his bountiful provision. Darby is loving his new digs and especially the animals on his mobile who he engages in many conversations (and no he's not sitting up yet, he was just propped up by Dadda).

We are really excited about scouting out Gainesville and have been given many tips from friends who have lived here. Our friend Mattie told us about a great fresh market in town that sells wonderful produce, meats, dairy, grocery, and organic/specialty foods. We hadn't looked the place up, but we were driving around on some errands yesterday and happened upon it. So we stopped in and it was a really fun time. They have great produce and meat and very competitive prices. Beyond that, they had a couple buckets of roses that we swear are from the same place we ordered our wedding roses from. Of course we couldn't resist them so Dylan treated me to a lovely bouquet for our new table. At $1 a stem I may just pick up a couple of roses a week when I go to the market. Thanks Mattie for the tip! Well, we have some more organizing to do before we can take house photos to post and Eugene needs to get out of the tub so I'd better run. Love to you all! ~Jess

NASCAR and baby-bottles....and the mystery of the purple lotion

During our cleaning and packing we have discovered many fun and interesting things about Eugene and his playtime habits. I pulled some old (never needed) baby bottles out of his closet today and handed them to him knowing that he would enjoy a novel toy. If he was a girl, he would probably have played "mommy" with his animals or a doll. Instead, he disassembled the bottles and filled them with matchbox cars.

We've had a bottle of Aveeno baby lotion since Eugene was born and we use it on his atopic skin. In the last couple of months I kept mentioning to Dylan that the lotion, which was always white, was starting to look kind of violet colored. Today during our packing, Dylan was pumping out some of the lotion so he could close it up and he put the excess on Eugene and I. It looked remarkably purple this morning. Since neither of us had done anything to the lotion we were perplexed that it was becoming a new color. We figured maybe Granny had added some purple colored lotion to the bottle at some point. Then Dylan brought the bottle into the bathroom to rinse it off and he found the answer to the mystery................see below.

To our surprise, sometime in the last couple of months, Eugene had opened the lotion up and dropped an open purple crayola marker into it. Mystery solved.

Well, after a very busy couple of days preparing for graduation and all of it's festivities, we are now recovering at home and moving on to the next big thing i.e. Gainesville. Graduation was a blast. The entire Nugentclan was in town along with Jessica's family, my Auntie and Uncle Lenny, and a host of friends from church. Our house was busting at the seams - as were many bellies after a huge picnic style feast! Thanks to alot of help from alot of folks everything worked out really well. Going into this weekend we didn't have any set plans, but Friday afternoon after Dylan got home early from clinic we saw a house posted on Craig's list in Gainesville and decided to hop in the car and go look at it. Thankfully it was a suitable place with a good landlord so we were able to put an end to our long and exhausting search for a house!

We decided to stop at Mom's overnight rather than going straight home. There is a U-Pick blueberry farm close by called "Butch's Blueberries" and they just started their season so we headed over this morning and picked 20 lbs of blueberries. The bushes were absolutely loaded! Unforuntatly, most of the berries were still green but there were plenty of blue ones hiding in there. So we will may end up going back next weekend also since the bushes will be at their peak.

Dylan, Melissa and I teamed up (with Darby in tow) and started picking. Granny and Eugene went off by themselves in the rows and we didn't see them for a while. Eugene is extrememly possessive of Granny's attention and he likes to have her to himself. Dylan was the champion picker of the day and he probably picked about half of our total berries (but he didn't have any children to care for) :) Dylan also took lots of photos to document our day and Granny took some too. Cousins

Last month Keri and Adam and Keith and Aimee came over to visit with us for a day and meet Darby. It was the first time that Eugene has seen his cousins since he's been old enough to really play with other children. Needless to say, they had a blast together. Eugene's Trip to the Zoo

Eugene and I had brand new experiences today. Eugene got to go to the zoo and I got five hours to work on stuff around the house with just Darby to care for! We both enjoyed our time tremendously, although I think he got the better end of the deal overall. After seeing the photo and video I think you will understand why.

John and Jess, our good friends and classmates of Dylan's, were planning a trip to the local zoo and offered to take Eugene with them. I was of course thrilled to send him because I knew he would have fun, I knew I could use the time, and I knew they would have a blast with him. They took tons of photos and several videos and shared them with me when they brought Eugene home. So without further ado, here is Eugene's day at the zoo. Thanks so much John and Jess!

We have been waiting for Darbs to start smiling so we could attempt capturing the moment. Of course, the first few times we got real smiles we did not want to get up and get the camera for fear of missing out on the cuteness. Well, this afternoon after I got home from clinic and Jess had finished feeding him, Darby seemed to be in a happy mood, so I layed him on the bed grabbed the camera and went through my usual facial contortions to get little babies to smile all the while holding the camera ready. I think the results speak for themselves, and though I am admittedly biased, I think there is not much cuter than that little pudge face. Enjoy!

Artist at heart

Eugene sometimes gets in these moods where he actually plays quietly (and non-destructively) in his room by himself other than at his designated "naptime". This morning he was in such a mood. I've been sorting through his toys lately and paring them down to just his favorites so that we have less potential for a messy room and more of a chance to focus on the toys that he loves. Today's toy of choice was his awesome set of blocks that "Uncle Doug" Perkins made for him. Sometimes he builds towers vertically, but today's tower was of the horizontal variety. Strawberries!

Well, after nearly four years of medical school, I finally played hookey. We recieved word that the U-pick strawberry fields were opening, and Mimi and the buddies decided to come over on short notice to pick, so I called in and got the day off. All told 130 quarts of berries were picked and we came home with 38 of those. We picked and processed thousands of berries and Jess hase made some nice looking jams and jellies. As you can see in the pictures, Eugene wasn't much help in the field, but he was Momma's big helper when it was time to de-leaf the berries. Enjoy the photos, but believe me the berries are much better in person!

Back on Bikes

After a long biking sabbatical for me, due to nine months of pregnancy and the theft of my road bike, I am now back to riding on a new mountain bike! Dylan has been riding his new mountain bike around the neighborhood whenever we go to the park, but now we can go together and take the boys as well. We hooked up our bike trailer (we had to get a new skewer to hitch it to the bikes since our old one was on my bike when it was stolen) and put the boys in it this evening for our first ride together. We have had a long and exhausting couple of days here. I was able to email this out to some folks, but not all so I decided to post the emails to the blog.

Hello all,

Since most of you have been a part of praying for the application/matching process for Dylan we wanted to let you know that he did not match into an orthopedic surgery position for next year. This is disappointing news for us, though we were preparing for the possibility (since about 20% of orthopedic applicants don't match). We would like to enlist your specific prayer for Dylan and I tomorrow as we take part in what is known as the "scramble" where applicants that didn't match try to get a position in a residency program that didn't fill up during the match. Since there are traditionally only about 1-2 orthopaedic positions that go unfilled every year and about 150 applicants vying for them, it is very unlikely that he will be able to secure one in orthopedics. So, Dylan will try to secure an unfilled position in general surgery for a year and then reapply next year for orthopedics.

We are confident that God will accomplish his will in our lives, whatever that may be, and that it will be for our best ultimately. He has shown himself incredibly faithful to us throughout our lives and especially during these four years of medical school and we have no doubt that he will continue to be faithful through this as well. However, we are still facing a large number of unknowns at this point and we would very much appreciate your prayers for us as we go through this process. Please pray that God would place us in a location with a good general surgical internship, where there is an orthopedic residency program so that he can develop relationships with the faculty in preparation for reapplying next year, where there is a solid church available and where there is affordable housing. Tomorrow will be the day that we contact programs with openings and hopefully he will have a position by the end of the day. It will be a fast and furious process with little time to pray and consider options so please pray for wisdom in our decision making and peace about the outcome. We will be sure to keep you informed of what transpires. Thank you all again.

Dear all,

Thank you for your prayers yesterday. I am relieved to report that Dylan will be doing a one year preliminary general surgery year in Gainesville at UF. As I read back through the list of specific prayers that I gave you I realized that all of them were answered yesterday. Since Dylan spent a month last fall in Gainesville doing orthopaedics, we are familiar with the school and area. There is a Sovereign Grace church in Gainesville, we will still be close to friends and family, and the housing is affordable. Though Dylan didn't match into orthopedics at Gainesville this year, it is possible that he can continue to build his relationships there and improve his standing with them for next year. Under the circumstances, today's outcome is probably the best available and we are grateful that God provided the opening for us.

Now our prayer is that 1) God will provide a house to rent for the year that will suite our family's needs at an affordable price 2) that God would provide the grace we need to get through this grueling year of general surgery 3) that the re-application process would go well and that Dylan would find favor in the eyes of the UF program.

Thank you again for your prayers. We will be sad to leave our church family, but we are very grateful for the location that God provided in Gainesville.

Well the long wait is over. After a longer than expected, but overall smooth, labor Darby Elias Nugent was born this morning at 5:25. He weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs. 10 oz. and he is 21 inches long. He seems to be a very sweet little guy with a milder temperment than Eugene at birth. We are already enjoying the prospect taking lots of pictures, and we thought we should share his earliest ASAP. We hope you enjoy them, and we look forward to posting more. We are all resting and recouping quite well and we are very grateful to God for His provision of another healthy son and the many friends and family who are taking such amazing care of us. Thank you.

Backyard Picnic

Well, I have been enjoying a "light" month of musculoskeletal radiology in February as we await the arrival of baby #2. We had beautiful weather this weekend, so we decided to enjoy a little fresh air lunchtime in the backyard. As I lay on the picnic blanket looking up at Eugene, I thought the blue sky would make a great backdrop for a photo or two. It was a bit of a challenge getting Eugene to be still enough, but I managed to get a few cute shots. We hope you enjoy them.

It is always fun when we get to see a cool bird that we weren't looking for in a place where we weren't looking for birds. Tonight when we arrived home from our care group meeting Dylan was unloading Eugene and I looked out the car window and noticed a strange silhouette on the eve of our neighbor's roof. It didn't take long to identify it as a Screech Owl, since it had the posture of an owl and was very small (about 8 inches tall). A second one joined it and then one of them flew right over Dylan's head into our mango tree. It was pretty comfortable there so Dylan grabbed the camera and snapped a few shots. Eugene was standing in the doorway watching excitedly and saying "Owl!! Hoooo Hoooo!!!". Something tells us that he will be dreaming about owls tonight! He's an avid birder already. Enjoy the photo!

What we've been up to

Our blogging has definitely taken a hit in the last few weeks. Many of you are probably up to date on what we've been doing, but since some are not I will fill you in. After Christmas we had several days of free time. We were able to take a canoe from Mom's house and do a couple of little outtings with Eugene around the area. It was fun to get out and explore again.

Then the second week of January Dylan had four interviews in six days in Albuquerque, NM, Tampa, Richmond, VA, and Gainesville, FL. It was a pretty busy week since a couple of the interviews were close together and we had to do a few airport trips.

The afternoon that I dropped Dylan off for his flight to Richmond, I went up to Mom's overnight to visit with her and Melissa. They came home with me the next day to go to church with us. When we got back to our house we found that it had been burglarized while I was gone. Fun fun. So we called the police and started a list of everything that was missing. It appeared to be a quick crash and grab kind of job so they didn't clean us out, but they did manage to grab quite a few items like Dylan's laptop, our camcorder, both of our road bikes, Dylan's coin collection, most of my jewelry, a couple of Dylan's watches, Dylan's otoscope/ophthalmoscope (who knows what they did with that!), and the flash for our camera. It was a disappointing loss but we are hoping to get fair compensation from our insurance policy. We are grateful that God protected us and that Eugene and I weren't home alone when it happened. Of course, it is one of those times when we realize anew that God is sovereign and good and that he has provided abundantly for us and will be faithful to do so in the future.

In fact, we've already experienced some of that provision. Dylan has been keeping his eye on craigslist and ebay on the off-chance that our bikes showed up. During his searching Saturday he saw an '08 Gary Fisher mountain bike advertized for $150 (original price was $650). So he called the guy and went right away to look at it. Thankfully, the timing was just right because 3-4 other people called the guy while Dylan was on his way. It turned out to be a home-schooling family that had recently moved to the area and the man was wanting to replace one of his mountain bikes with a road bike because they live near a bike trail. So now Dylan has a new bike to have fun on and we'll be keeping our eyes out for a bike for me at some point. Right now, of course, I cannot ride a bike and it will be at least six months before Nugent #2 is able to sit up in the bike trailer. So for now, our road bicycling days are over and we will join the ranks of casual mountain bikers. Though it is sad to bid farewell to the speed of a road bike, it will be nice to not be tied down by all the accessories that road biking requires. Hopefully a few months from now, us four Nugents will be able to get out and bicycle together!

So onto the topic of Nugent #2, I am now within 3 weeks of my due date and feeling like my belly can't possibly get any bigger. We have set up the pack-n-play in our room and assembled my bag to take to the birthing center when the time comes. We've lined up several friends to be on-call (ironically they are all medical students, so they know what being on-call is like!) to watch Eugene for us. Now we just get to watch and wait! We will make an announcement as soon as we have something to announce! So I think that sums it up for now. I will probably think of other things soon, but I plan on posting in a more timely fashion from now on!

Whooping and Hollering

Well, it has been a busy month since Christmas, and Jess will likely update you later, but in the mean time I thought I would share a photo album and brief story with you.
On our way home from visiting the Nugentclan in Deltona and going to my last interview in Orlando, we decided to detour to Joe Overstreet Landing near St. Cloud for a birding trip. We did not see everything we hoped to, but we had a good time photographing a meadowlark, a bald eagle and a pair of whooping cranes! And if that was not exciting enough, as I returned to the car a tour bus pulled up and an irate tourist jumped out and accosted first Jessica and then myself ranting and raving about how we should not be near the cranes and how lucky we are that a wildlife officer was not on the bus and we should read the rules and regs before going out and taking pictures! Needless to say it was a sour way to finish out our trip. However, being the studious people we are, we looked up the Endangered Species Protection act this evening and we were in no way in violation of the law. In fact, we would maintain we were acting in the spirit of preservation and education by documenting these rare birds. I have my suspicions that the "gentleman" who was kind enough to share his thoughts with us was as much perturbed by the fact that the cranes flew away when the bus pulled up as he was by the fact that I took pictures of them. Anyway, it was (mostly) a great experience, and we hope you enjoy the pictures.

A Day of Remembrance

Today is Dad's birthday, so of course it is a day of special remembrance for us. I thought you might enjoy a photo of Eugene and I with Dad taken on April 14, 2007. I am grateful beyond words for Dad's faith in Jesus Christ during his life and that we share the same faith as a family. Though we miss Dad so much and wish that he was here with us to share our lives, we know the incredible promises that are given to believers and anticipate seeing him again with much joy.

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

It has been a fun year, nonetheless, and we have had the joy of doing many things that we treasured doing with Dad. The day after Christmas, Dylan's family came to B-ville and we took a trip on the Weeki Wachee River with them. It was a really fun time. The weather was warm (bad for Christmas, good for swimming) and the boys had a blast swimming and jumping into the water from a tree. Eugene is such a big man now that he can sit by himself in the canoe and drag his fingers through the water while Dadda paddles. I will be posting a slide show of photos from that trip very soon.

Dylan and I have taken great pleasure this year as we've watched Eugene grow into a little boy. When he was born he looked very much like Dylan. But as he has gotten older he resembles me (and consequently Dad) a lot more. Some of the expressions he makes look so much like Dad's! We love having those little pieces of Dad to treasure in Eugene. And of course Eugene is learning to enjoy exporing creation the way Dad did as well.

Thank you for taking the time to remember with me. I am so grateful for the many people who still regularly pray for us. Please know that God has been faithful to answer your prayers. It is evident in the fruit that he has produced in our lives. It is a good and loving God that we serve and I pray that his faithfulness would be increasingly evident to you in the new year.

Christmas Morning

Since this is the first Christmas that Eugene is aware of the idea of presents, it was fun to watch him open up his stocking stuffers and oooh and ahhh over the contents. We found out that he is very meticulous in his opening and he likes to put the wrapping paper in a pile when he's done. I couldn't resist taking a picture of his very cute little feet while he was busy opening. I'm sure we'll have more photos to come of Eugene using some of his new gifts. We're off to B-ville to see Granny, Bitty, Didi, Mimi, and all the buddies!

Christmas Break Birding

Well, as Jess wrote in her last post, we have been busy looking for birds with the new camera. Unfortunately, we did not go visit the Nugentclan in Deltona this weekend because of the stomach bug that was spreading through their house. So, rather than risk it, we stuck closer to home and yesterday found a new local park that had a few nice birds and then today we went to old reliable Fort DeSoto park and found a bunch of cool shells, sand-dollars, sea urchins, oh and a few birds too. Sandhill Crane

Dylan took this photo of a sandhill crane on one of our first outings to Lake Woodruff NWR with the new camera. Since Dylan is now on Christmas break, our days will be filled with two things we love: family and birding. Thus, in the midst of a visit with family, we are planning another serious day of birding so hopefully we'll have lots more cool bird photos to show off soon. Gone Hunting!

The Sun is Up

Lately Eugene has been fascinated with the moon, stars, and sun. One night while Dylan was on-call, Eugene and I had gotten home as it was getting dark. He noticed the moon and stars (which were actually planets) in the sky and he wouldn't let me go inside for a long time. He kept pointing them out to me. Then he would run inside and point out the star on the tree and run back outside to see the stars in the sky.

One of his more recent sentences is "the sun is up!". We kept telling him that he couldn't wake up in the morning until the sun was up and it was bright outside (he doesn't always heed our instruction in this matter). So now he likes to point out the sun and tell us that it is up. In this picture taken today, Eugene was dragging me outside to show me the sun. He was a teary mess but he was determined to look at the sun. (and by the way, all these photos were taken with our new wide-angle lens, thank you so much to our family who got it and the camera for us!)

Christmas Tree

On Friday night on our way home from Brooksville, we stopped at Ergle's Christmas Tree Farm and picked out our Christmas tree. It is a concolor (or white) fir. We set it up Saturday night and since then Eugene has made sure that the "yights" are always on. He was a big helper as we set it up by putting on ornaments and naming all the different colored lights. Afterwards we celebrated with eggnog. Sunday morning we managed to set up the tripod and shoot some family photos.

During our time at the Nugent clan house, a nighttime space shuttle launch was planned. So that evening, Dylan and Eugene and I drove about 20 miles closer to the coast to an area where it is flat and easy to see the launch (from about 15 miles away). We brought the camera of course and tried to get some photos of the event. Since we were pretty far away still it was mostly just a streak of light, but it was impressive nonetheless. Here are a couple of photos. The first one is a wide angle view of the launch and the second one is a significantly zoomed-in version of what our telephoto lens caught. You can actually see a little bit of the bottom of the shuttle with the orbiter's rudder sticking down to the left.

Granny's Citrus

We are back at Granny's house and Eugene and I have been enjoying the beautiful weather outside. I have been experimenting with the new camera and snapping some photos while Eugene explores the yard. The citrus are ripening and a few of them are ready to eat. We enjoyed a tangerine together today.

Thus far, Eugene has appeared to be left-handed. But in a lot of tasks, like drawing and eating, he switches back and forth. Occassionally, and today was a prime example, he uses both hands simultaneously. Here, he is eating his yogurt with both hands with both a fork and a spoon!

For some reason I've been kind of nostalgic these past couple of weeks. Maybe it is because it is fall, maybe it is because Dylan is away (and today happens to be a 4th which means we usually do something to celebrate), maybe it is because I'm pregnant, maybe it is because Eugene is 26 months and such a big boy now, or maybe it is a combination of all of them. But no matter the reason I decided to take a little look back at our family's early days and post a few photos and videos from days gone by. (It could also have something to do with our camera being broken right now so I have no new pictures to post, but just as fair warning, our families have gotten together, pooled their earnings, and blessed us with an early graduation gift for Dylan that is on the way and is sure to result in tons more photos to share very soon!) Baby Update

Well I'm more than halfway through this pregnancy! We had our ultrasound last Friday and thankfully, Dylan was able to leave his rotation in Gainesville early enough to be there and get a glimpse of his new baby! Everything looked good. The ultrasound confirmed my due date around February 27-28th. We only got one photo of the little one to share, and it isn't the greatest, but here it is anyways! The first one is without any labels for those of you who want to see the real deal. The second one has labels to identify the baby's parts. And as with Eugene, we won't know whether it is a boy or girl till it arrives!

The "Egg"

This morning after I finished getting ready for the day, Eugene was playing around in my room so I just left him there and went to check email etc. After a few minutes I heard him making some funny sounds in the livingroom and felt the need to investigate. I heard him saying "egg" and when I rounded the corner I saw that he had gotten a small mixing bowl and was tapping his egg on the edge of the bowl in an attempt to crack it.

Of course, I bolted toward him in an attempt to grab the egg before he broke it. When I had it I realized that it wasn't an egg after all. He had gotten into my supply of bath/spa goodies and found a large, round, white bath salt! Since it looked just like an egg he figured he'd give me a head start on breakfast! Needless to say, we had scrambled eggs this morning.

Fall

Even though the leaves are not falling here (and probably won't until spring), we are enjoying a little bit of cooler fall-like weather. It started feeling like fall several weeks ago and I got fall fever and made ginger cookies, chili, minestrone soup, pumpkin pie, and other fall favorites. Then we had a few weeks of temperatures reaching 88-90 degrees and it was back to summer. So now that it is feeling like fall again I have decided it was time to buy a pumpkin. Eugene and I made a trip to the store today and I saw that pumpkins were on sale so we picked out a nice one to bring home. As soon as I told him what it was, Eugene started calling it "pump!". I wanted to take a few fun fall photos of Eugene and Pump so I got them both outside and tried my best to keep them close enough together to be in the same photo. It wasn't easy because Eugene is such a busy two year old. Anyways, here are a couple of my favorites. Enjoy and Happy Fall!

This morning, Eugene and I made finger paints. Well, I made them while he watched and then he played with them while I photographed. In the top photo, he was pointing to all the different colors saying "green" "red" "green" "red" (those are the only two colors he can say right now). When I showed him how to transfer paint to the paper with his fingers he got the idea really quickly. And there you have it!

One of the treasures we picked up on our trip to NC, thanks to Aunt Marcia and Shirley, was their massage table which they are passing down to Melissa. Today after church, we set it up and were getting massages from her. Eugene was very interested in the "bed" as he called it and was climbing all over my back while she was rubbing it. As soon as I got up he laid down and prepped for his massage. Perfect photo op!

Daddy Daycare

Well, it never fails. Every weekend that I have off with the hope of getting all kinds of stuff done someone always seems to get sick. This week after returning from Celebration, Eugene had a runny nose - no big deal. But Jess has felt achy and tired and even ran a little fever last night. So, I have been running interference with the big man so that he does not pounce on her too often, while my agenda changed from studying for this week's assignments and working on research to cleaning up the house (it has been a wreck lately), mowing the grass, doing laundry and feeding Eugene and the sicky-head when she has had an appetite. Speaking of feeding Eugene, I snapped a few pics of him after he demolished a chocolate pudding this morning - I think he liked it. Well, I hear Eugene harrassing Jess again so I better run - sigh, a day in the life of a house-husband. =)

Also today, we returned to the place of Eugene's birth for our first prenatal appointment for our newest Nugent. It was very exciting to hear a strong, fast heartbeat and find out that everything looks good so far! Well, I guess that's all for now!

A Lesson in Puzzling

When we moved into this house there were several really ugly shrubs lining the front porch. Dylan couldn't stand the shrubs and always wanted to take them out. But since we had a limited budget for landscaping, especially at a rented house, we tried to just be content with the ugly shrubs for a while. Finally one day Dylan was ready for them to be gone so we decided that we would take them out knowing that it might be a while before we could replace them with something more aestheticly pleasing. We prayed that God would provide us with something cheap and attractive to put in their place. Whenever we were in a garden center we would look around and see what was available but we never found the right thing at the right price. Then one Saturday I needed to run to Wal-Mart so Dylan decided to take a study break and join me. We said "well maybe God will provide something for us today!". Initially, we didn't see anything so we checked out, but on the way out of the garden center we noticed some small dwarf alamanda plants (which was one of the plants we thought would work well in that area). The sign next to them said $4 which was surprisingly low. So we checked the price at the register and it was correct. Apparently they had gotten a new shipment of plants that were in slightly better condition (for $12 each!) so they marked the older ones down to $4. So we decided to buy six of them and we were thanking God the whole way home for providing exactly what we were hoping for at a price that was amazing! Just another example of how God provides specifically for our needs. These photos were all taken by Dylan. During his study breaks he sometimes goes out to the butterfly garden to snap a few photos. Crayons anyone?

The other day Eugene came in and asked for his colors (Crayons/markers/colored pencils). He had one of his old drawings in his hand. I guess he decided it needed some revision. I got him set up at his desk with his crayons. Several minutes later we checked in on him and found him with a mouth full of chewed up purple crayon. On his paper was a pile of mashed up crayon that he had spit out. It is a good thing they make those things non-toxic!

The Big Boy Bed

Thanks to two families in our church, we are borrowing a toddler bed as we begin to transition Eugene to a "big boy bed". I set the bed up yesterday and Eugene thought it was pretty cool. At naptime, I tucked him into the bed with some of his usual blankets (the rest of which I left in the crib). He, as he usually does in his crib, played for a while with his toys and then fell asleep. After he awoke from his nap I noticed that while he was playing he had gone to his crib and extracted the rest of the blankets I had left and brought them into his new bed. I figured that it was a pretty good indication that he has claimed the bed as his own. At bedtime he did the same routine and he seemed to sleep pretty well. So we'll see, but so far it looks like he is now officially a big boy! The above photo was taken during his first nap in his bed and the below photo was taken this morning.

Work Day

Eugene is living up to his role as a doctor-to-be's son. He loves to learn about anatomy. Right now he only knows the common names, but someday soon we'll start teaching him the medical terminology for his various body parts!

Here is a slideshow of some of our recent activities. Since it is summer in Florida we have been eating a lot of watermelon. Eugene loves the stuff and Dylan loves taking pictures of Eugene eating it! Last weekend we went up to Brooksville and spent a relaxing weekend with Mom and Melissa. Sick and Tired!

Hi all! It has been a while since I posted because we have had a very busy couple of weeks here. Dylan wrapped up his orthopedics rotation this month at USF and had a really good time. He got to see some really neat surgeries and get to actually do some hands-on stuff, finally!
Last week Eugene and I were in the Vacation Bible School nursery at church Tuesday through Thursday. It was a fun, but very full week. Then on Friday we split for Deltona for the weekend. Keri and the kids were down and Keith, Aimee, and Collin dropped in also! Again, another full but fun weekend as you might imagine with 14 people in the house!
Then we got home Sunday night and Monday I felt terrible. I slept the whole day and had the full gamut of flu-like symptoms. I've been getting better since then, but Dylan came down with the same thing yesterday. I think we are on the up and up now!

Today was a fun day for Eugene and I because we got to give extra special attention to Dylan (DaDa) and show him just how much we love and appreciate him. We had a yummy breakfast together and Dylan opened his present from us which was a tan sport coat (he's always wanted to own a sport coat or two). Of course he looks very dashing in it! Melissa came down and we went to church together. We had a relaxing afternoon with some studying for Dylan, naptimes for all of us, the US Open, then dinner outside on the porch, and more US Open.
